Saturday, October 15, 2022, the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) together with the Alumni Association of FPH UI held an Online Seminar “Taichi and Health”. This online seminar is one of a series of celebrations for the 57th FPH UI Anniversary. Attended by more than 100 FPH UI Academics and the public, the seminar was held through the Zoom Meeting platform.
Seminar Presenting 4 (four) materials and moderated by Yan Ardhany, S.E., M.AP., CH., CHt., from KPP Pratama Jakarta Senen. The first material with the title “Taichi, Philosophy, and Practice” was delivered by a researcher at the Center for the Study of Pancasila and the Eastern Virtue of Pancasila University, Ir. Jusuf Susanto. Ir. Jusuf reveals basic things about Taichi, philosophy, Taichi’s connection with life, and how Taichi can affect everyday life.
Furthermore, Dr. dr. Nyilo Purnami, Sp.ENT-KL(K) who is an Academic, Consultant, and ENT Expert from the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, delivered a material entitled “Taichi from Meditation to Medication in Motion “. Through the material, Dr. Nyilo delivers medication in the Tai Chi movement. Having a background in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist, Dr. Nyilo conveys Tai Chi’s journey to produce relaxation in the body. “After I opened the literature, many reported that tinnitus (noise) disappeared when practicing Tai Chi, ” said Dr. Nyilo.
The third material was delivered by Dr. Aam Bastaman, S.E., M.Sc., who is an Academic from Trilogy University. Doctor Aam conveyed about the social benefits of Tai Chi gymnastics mass training activities in the community. “Research conducted by Harvard University for more than 80 years, shows how social interaction is an important component of a happy life,” said Dr. Aam. At the end of his presentation, Dr. Aam invites the participants to join the Taichi community to maintain their health and fitness.
In the last session, the Dean of FPH UI, Prof. dr. Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, M.S., D.Sc., also took part as a guest speaker with the material entitled “Taichi Gymnastics as Primary and Primordial Prevention”. As an academic in the field of public health, Prof. Mondastri conveyed a lot of research related to Taichi, especially related to primary and primordial prevention. “One of the primordial preventions that can be considered in the community is to include physical health subjects, especially Taichi, into the school / college curriculum,” said Prof. Mondastri.
Not only material presentations, but this seminar also featured a demonstration of Tai Chi moves led by Master Yufnizul from the UI Taichi Community at this online seminar. The presence of this seminar shows that health is not only about drugs and hospitals. Routine activities, such as Taichi, can also be an effort to maintain our health.
