To increase inbound study activities as well as as a commitment to the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) at the Universitas Indonesia (UI) to become a referral center in public health sciences, FPH UI is working with The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) to provide education related to public health in Indonesia to students from Australia through the Public Health Study Tour (PHST) activity.
On 16-21 January 2023, FPH UI accepted 36 students from 9 universities in Australia as participants in the Public Health Study Tour (PHST) who were accompanied by 6 (six) students from FPH UI as buddies of content and 3 (three) students from the Faculty Cultural Studies (FIB) as buddies of logistics.
PHST itself is an intensive two-week program for Australian students who wish to learn and gain experience regarding public health in Indonesia, both in urban, suburban, and rural areas. This program has been implemented by FPH UI together with ACICIS since 2016. This time it is the 13th batch of PHST.
PHST will be held in 2 (cities), namely in Depok on January 16-21, 2023, and Yogyakarta on January 22-29 2023. The activities held include a series of interactive lectures, visits to health facilities, as well as related organizations or communities, such as visits to the Cibubur Hospital, Jakarta and Marzuki Mahdi Hospital to find out about secondary and tertiary care, as well as visits to several Reduce Reuse Recycle (TPS 3R) Waste Processing Sites, namely Mutiara Bogor Raya TPS 3R, Cipaku TPS 3R, and Ranggamekar TPS 3R to find out how waste is managed. This provided an opportunity for participants to see first-hand how the public health system works in Indonesia and understand the complex challenges it faces.
Apart from that, the participants also had the opportunity to learn about Indonesian culture by visiting one of them at Setu Babakan which is a Betawi Cultural village which is devoted to being a Betawi Culture creation space. In addition, participants also had the opportunity to learn Indonesian through classes organized by the UI International Language Institute (LBI).
PHST activities in collaboration with FPH UI invited various speakers as seminar speakers. Various experts involved as resource persons include Yudi Bachrioktora, M.A .; Prof. Purnawan Junadi; Dr. Ede Surya Darmawan, S.K.M., M.D.M.; Prof. dr. This PHST activity is an activity that is expected to provide good experiences and expand networks for participants, as expected from the Dean of FPH UI, Prof. dr. Mondastri Korib Sudaryo, M.S., D.Sc., in his opening remarks. “Hopefully from all planned activities, all students can get the opportunity to learn, share ideas about public health issues and programs and finally happily develop friendship and network among all participants,” said Prof. Mondastry.
