Saturday, November 12, 2022, the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI) together with the Department of Nutrition FPH UI held The 7th International Seminar on Nutrition (ISON) with the theme “Optimize Human Health and Sustainability on Earth with A Planetary Health Diet”. The activity, which was held online through the Zoom Meeting platform, was open to the public and was attended by 200 participants and speakers from within the country and abroad.
This international seminar activity is the final series of the Nutrition Expo UI 2022. The largest activity held by the FPH UI Nutrition Family Association is a forum for students from various universities in Indonesia to provide information and educate the public in general regarding the importance of nutritional aspects in determining public health. and the future of the earth.
The diet’s flexibility in adapting to nutritional needs, personal preferences, and cultural traditions has made the Planetary Health Diet a global dietary reference. As a new concept, the Planetary Health Diet emphasizes a plant-based diet in which whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes make up the bulk of the food consumed. This Planetary Health Diet was echoed by The EAT-Lancet Commission.
“This seminar is a form of commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in action to overcome the problems of climate change, pollution to food waste which can accelerate the destruction of the earth and its relation to human health in a sustainable manner,” said Deputy Dean for Education, Research and Student Affairs FPH UI, Dr. Ir. Asih Setiarini, M.Sc., in her speech.
This activity also presented a foreign speaker, Lawrence James Haddad, Ph.D., who is the Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) as a Keynote Speaker discussing the Planetary Health Diet: Optimizing Human and Environmental Health Through Food.
“Health transformation is needed for a food system that is safe for humans and the planet starting from sequence, priority, implementation, assessment and evaluation, each of which requires technical soundness, political buy-in, and administrative capacity. Collaboration between the government and stakeholders in seeing the situation and conditions in analyzing data and research is needed for its sustainability,” said Lawrence James Haddad in his presentation.
Furthermore, President of The Federations of Asian Nutrition Societies, Prof. Dr. Hardinsyah, M.S., presented Transformation to an Environmentally Sustainable Food System material through Adapting Healthy Diets. Prof. Hardinsyah comprehensively discussed the technical transformation flow starting from establishing data in supporting sources, promoting evidence-based policy making and policy alignment, and how to strengthen the sustainable food system sector to support each country in risk prevention and mitigation.
On the same occasion, Mulia Nurhasan, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., Food and Nutrition Scientist at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) discussed the Contextualizing Planetary Health Diet for Indonesia and dr. Rina Agustina Ph.D., Head of Human Nutrition Research Center (HNRC) IMERI FK UI discussing The Role of Planetary Health Diet in Reducing the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease.
One of the ways to emphasize a healthy diet is to promote a variety of healthy local foods through Fill My Plate. The Fill My Plate diet also emphasizes limiting sugar, salt and fat in daily consumption through balanced nutrition guidelines consisting of 10 messages about maintaining nutrition.
This year, Nutrition Expo UI 2022 raised the main theme “Better Nutrition: Save Our Health, Save Our Planet”, a series of activities starting from Nutrionist Wanna Be, Poster Competition, Article Competition, Nutrition 101, and ending with the International Seminar on Nutrition (ISON ). (AHS)
