Department of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Faculty of Public Health (FPH) Universitas Indonesia (UI) received a visit from STIKES Rafflesia Depok on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. Received at the OHS Laboratory of the E RIK UI Building, this visit was attended by 16 students and 1 mentor person.
Stikes Rafflesia, which does not yet have an OSH study program, visited the OHS Department of FPH UI to conduct studies and benchmarking. During this visit, Dr. Hendra, S.K.M., M.K.K.K., one of the senior lecturers at the OHS Department of FPH UI, held an expert lecture. The first material presented was about “Noise in the Workplace”. Noise is defined as unwanted sound, a natural and artificial activity. Noise causes various disturbances in the workforce, such as physiological disorders, psychological disorders, communication disorders, and disturbances identified with noise, namely deafness or hearing loss. “The impact of noise does not only cause hearing loss. There is also noise that does not cause hearing loss but interferes with other aspects,” said the source from OHS FPH UI.
Not only related to noise, but Dr. Hendra also delivered material related to vibration. It is stated that workers can experience two types of vibration: whole-body and hand-arm. Vibration in the workplace is mostly experienced when using mechanical equipment.
Furthermore, the visiting participants were also given material regarding dust or particulate matter and lighting. Dr. Hendra, S.K.M., M.K.K.K., said that lighting is the easiest hazard because the formulas and tools are fewer than the previous material. Lighting is also called visible light or visible light. “If we talk about light in the workplace, there should be 6 of them, but what is most often counted in OHS is illumination,” said Dr. Hendra. Illumination is the lighting level that reaches the worker’s work table. The desk needs to be in the light for optimal light.
In addition to delivering the material, the practicum was also carried out using measurement tools from the material that had been delivered. These measurement tools are complete, ranging from instruments for whole-body vibrations, hand vibrations, noise, light, and dust. The visiting participants from STIKES Rafflesia Depok looked enthusiastic about listening to the material and taking part in the material measurement practicum.
Through this kind of information sharing, FPH UI hopes to help other health institutions to develop and improve the competence and quality of public health education in other health institutions in Indonesia. (AAP)
